Just like many other payment companies, Mastercard is exposed to many attempts of hacking and data theft. Faced with the increase in cybercrime, Mastercard has tighten its security measures. Mastercard chose Waterloo to establish its first center in Europe which will be dedicated to the fight against cybercrime.
Mastercard already has a center in Canada for fighting against cybercrime. Recently, Mastercard chose Belgium to make its first investment outside of North America. The center in Waterloo will act as the unique cybersecurity center for all of the European continent. The main reason behind this location selection is Waterloo's central position regarding Mastercard's European partners in cybersecurity. The center is expected to be operational in less than a year, in early 2021.
