Belgium is a very open economy with a trade-to-GDP ratio of more than 160% in 2019. However, its principal trade partners remain its neighbouring countries and by extension the EU as a whole. Trade with Germany, France and the Netherlands represents around 40% of our country’s exports and imports, while two-thirds to three-quarters of trade happens within the EU.
